Atlanta singer's CD a 'Pure' R&B treat

Atlanta Journal & Constitution 01/20/04

Derrick "D" Brown isn't your typical egomaniacal budding pop star. When he walked into Outwrite Books last week and his just-released debut album, "Pure D" was playing on the Midtown coffee emporium's sound system, "I kinda ran out of there," he admits, laughing. "I was a bundle of emotions. All of a sudden, it hit me that all my hard work had paid off," the 39-year-old Norcross resident told Buzz. Brown's album, three years in the making, is a rare commodity in today's pop music world. With assistance from songwriter Byron Kramer, Brown wrote 13 of the 15 tracks and serves as executive producer on the effort. Brown's rich, velvety, butterscotch-coated voice is decidedly old school, reminiscent of Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross. The R&B grooves on the disc, meanwhile, provide a showcase for Brown's personal, inspirational lyrics. "Some of my friends are already asking if certain songs are about them!" Brown says. "If it's something that's on my heart, if it impacts me, I'm probably going to write about it." The singer credits his sister Nedra Brown Duhart for inspiring him to add a cover of the 1970s ballad "If" to the album as it neared completion. "She made a CD copy of a concert I had performed in that she had on [cassette] tape from when I was 13," he explains. "She gave it to me last summer, and when I listened to the song, I knew I had to include it on the album. It's part of where I've been as a singer." Family and friends have already scored seats to Brown's album release concert at the historic Douglass Theatre in Macon, set for Feb. 7. "Pure D" is in stock now at Criminal Records in Little Five Points and Outwrite and Brushstrokes in Midtown.
